Spanking and Parenting - The Solution

I recently received an awesome email about parenting and spanking. I realize this is highly controversial for some of you... but just relax. This email WILL SOLVE THE DEBATE about whether or not to spank a child. Just read on - trust me.

Most of the American populace thinks it improper to spank children, so I have tried other methods to control my kids when they have one of "those moments." One that I found effective is for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk.

Some say it's the vibration from the car. Others say it's the time away from any distractions such as TV, video games, computer, iPod, etc. Either way, my kids usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our car ride together. Eye to eye contact helps a lot too.

I've included a photo below of one of my sessions with my son, in case you would like to use the technique.

I suppose if I couldn't spank my kids, this might work. Then again, is spanking really that bad? What's your take?

Clear boundaries that have defined consequences. For some spanking is defined before hand as the consequence. When spanking is done in anger it gets dangerous. It is hard to wait as parents until you have calmed down to spank, but is so much more effective. Letting your child know that you are sad that they have to be spanked is so powerful. My kids are long past the spanking years, but we have had some times when both child and parent are in tears, but know what is necessary. Tough but I found more effective than an angry swat. Not that we were perfect, just learning as we go.

Dana, thanks for the feedback... but I think the car ride might bring some healthy tears as well. :)

Ah...the spanking conversation. I think we all have our ways to discipline - the main thing is that it is done in love and not anger. I have personally never spanked my kids - I have always found other ways to teach and discipline them but most of our friends spank and that is no problem for us. We all have our ways to love and train our munchkins up right.
